The story of Pendulum Books bears resemblance to other sleaze and later "adult" publishing ventures with the notable twist that its founder and original mastermind, Michael Thevis, was later convicted of murder and presently can be reached in federal prison.  Thevis was an Atlanta-based newsstand operator in the early 1950s, struggling to stay ahead of the bill collector and keep his family from poverty.  Simple market-research showed him that men's magazines were far and away his most lucrative item, so at a time of particular desperation, he decided to venture quietly into the men's magazine world by publishing his own no-budget no-frills men's magazines -- made from photographs begged, borrowed or in some cases stolen from other publishers -- alongside texts of a similar pedigree.  It wasn't long before he was on his feet and his magazine empire was flourishing.  In 1967, with a booming well-oiled distribution network, Peachtree Books, going at full throttle, Thevis branched off into book publishing following a similar model -- first putting out license-free "public-domain" texts (mostly European erotica with untrackable ownership links).  After proving profitable, the Pendulum enterprise moved West where the books and magazines were written and edited by writers under contract, notably Edward D. Wood. Jr., Charles ("Norman Bates") Anderson, Dennis Rodriguez and others.  In a brief time, Pendulum diversified its book lines and the core editorial staff of Rodriguez, Wood and Anderson produced the Gallery Press, Calga, and SECS book and magazine lines.  These late 60s publications rank among the best works of the West-coast hippie-porn era.

To cash in on the enormously popular Liverpool Library Press brand, Thevis developed an almost identical book line known as The Little Library Press which had a limited print run of less than a hundred titles.

Be sure to cross-check the "Writers" and "Artists" and "Themes" areas also!

New books will be added as they become available.

Here is the ever-growing catalog selection of Pendulum books and mags.  Books and mags currently available are noted by their price tag.  Haven't read any of these, so please send in your thoughts, plot summaries and any background info!   Thanks!

How to order

This is a self-made website and while it might be extensive, it is not super-sophisticated.  The little buy icon icon takes you to a generic order form where you can type in the author, title, price, and indicate whether you would like to send me a check, money order or credit card payment.  I will confirm availability via e-mail, and once I've received payment, I'll ship the book.  If you have questions,  please don't hesitate to ask  via email.

Condition Grades

There's a standard bookseller vocabulary, with terms like Fine, Very Good, Good and Poor to assess condition (to see these terms defined, click on the link above).  Most of my books are in Very Good or better condition, and I tend to overemphasize their flaws so that any surprise is a pleasant one.  Feel free to ask questions, and if the book isn't in the condition described, you may return it for a full refund.

Wants Lists

If I don't have the book you seek in stock, I will retain your book search in my wants files and email you when I do have a copy for sale. If you don't hear back from me immediately, that probably means I don't have a copy right now.  But fear not,  I keep extensive files and never stop looking....  so send me your request;  you've got nothing to lose!
